Commit An Angelic Act With UNICEF

By Doshka Harvey

Unicef_African_Nativity2.jpg

African Nativity, created by Tanzanian artists, made of mahogany and ebony, $50

The gift that gives back is one of the best gifts ever.  One way to give with an open heart to children in need is via UNICEF.  According to UNICEF 22,000 children die daily from preventable causes.  UNICEF, which currently aids children in over 150 countries, believes that number should be zero.  As citizens of the world we can commit an angelic act with UNICEF via the power of our donation or the purchase of UNICEF cards and gifts.

Perusing their 2010 Fall Collection Catalog as well as their 2010 Inspired Gifts Holiday Catalog, one will be impressed to find a number of items to serve as presents to others, while also being able to opt for inspired gifts which go directly to the children who need it.

In addition, for the holidays, UNICEF has partnered with FEED Guatemala Bags and IKEA.  According to UNICEF "for every FEED 1 Guatemala pouch and FEED 3 Guatemala bag sold at Lord & Taylor stores in the U.S. and online, FEED will donate $3.50 or $10.50, respectively, to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to help support UNICEF's nutrition programs in Guatemala."  For more information please visit:  www.lordandtaylor.com/feed

And, "for each soft toy purchased in IKEA stores around the world between November 1 and December 24, IKEA will make a donation of 1 euro (approx. $1.39), to be split between the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and Save the Children.  The funding for UNICEF this year will support the innovative 'Schools for Africa' campaign and other education programs in Asia as well as Central and Eastern Europe."  For more information please visit:  www.IKEA-usa.com

A Magnificent Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond Ring

Centering an impressive cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant-cut diamond weighing 54.20 carats, VS1 clarity, Excellent Polish and Excellent Symmetry

Est. $2.5/4 million

Last week I had the great opportunity to attend an exclusive preview - held by Sotheby's, Architectural Digest and GIA Laboratory & Research -- of the Magnificent Jewels.  These are jewels being auctioned off by Sotheby's this Thursday, December 9th, and what a collection it is.  If you ever questioned whether or not diamonds truly are a girl's best friend, be assured, this particular sale will dispel any of your doubts.

A Magnificent and Rare Light Pink Diamond Ring

A diamond linked to the famed Golconda mines of India, the oval light pink diamond weighs 10.46 carats, is Internally Flawless and type IIa

Est. $1.4/1.6 million

At the preview event, diamonds and pearls were discussed by Gary Schuler, Senior Vice President and Director of Jewellery at Sotheby's and Tom Moses, Senior Vice President of GIA Laboratory & Research.  Listening to these two gentlemen speak so eloquently about jewels showcased why they are masters in their field.  Schuler has overseen Sotheby's Magnificent and Important Jewels sales in New York since 2002.  When it comes to gemologists, Tom Moses is the world's most respected and accomplished.  He has been SVP of the GIA Laboratory & Research since October 2005.

According to Schuler, the December jewellery sale is usually one of the biggest conducted by Sotheby's in the year.  Sales take place four times during the year in February, April, September or October, and December.  For the upcoming Magnificent Jewel auction bidders from at least forty different countries can be expected.  With gems like these on offer, one can see why.

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Year-Round

By Doshka Harvey

TheMetropolitanMuseumofArtm.jpgIt is important to encourage learning and the discovery of new things.  One of the places that I find quite fascinating and which gets the neurons firing in my brain is The MET (The Metropolitan Museum of Art).

Throughout the year one can find a number of exhibits to explore.  It's a great place to visit alone, on a first date or with family and friends, especially, during those chilly New York days.  Brrrrrr!  Get out of the cold and peruse The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing, for instance.

TheMet_Temple_of_Dendurm.jpgI find that a membership to The MET would be an extraordinary holiday gift to provoke learning.

Membership starts as low as $60.  There is even a family package for $200.  For further details visit the membership page here

What Does Manolo Blahnik Wear?

By Doshka Harvey

Manolo_Blahnik3m.jpgAt a Bergdorf Goodman event where Manolo Blahnik signed copies of his new book, Manolo's New Shoes, there were many women salivating over the designs by this shoe God.  While the ladies were fixated on jewels to adorn their feet, my attention was on Mr. Blahnik and what he was sporting.

Manolo_Blahnik2m.jpgSure, I was intrigued that Andre Leon Talley was a few feet away from me and that Candy Spelling was eyeing a sexy pair at the table next to me, but something else was attracting my interest.  What shoes does Manolo Blahnik wear?

Manolo_Blahnik4mii.jpgLooking down upon his feet I spotted him elegantly parading a very pink pair of loafers.  Click!  I took a photo of it.  How fitting!  Only he could get away with such an act.  After all, he is a master of women's footwear design.

Ferrari Retail Therapy

By Doshka Harvey

One of the great things about living in New York City is being able to experience retail therapy from pretty much any location.  Uptown, downtown, midtown, Soho, Noho, Times Square or Park Ave - you name the area and there will always be a shopping feast for your eyes AND wallet.

I recently had fun exploring the Ferrari store located on Park Ave.  I may not be able to afford any of the luxury cars prominently displayed in the store just yet, but it's very exciting to look.  Girls love fast cars too boys!

Until I can afford my future red Ferrari 458 Italia, retail therapy of the more affordable items will have to do.  At the store one can find goodies ranging from driving moccasins, jackets, cute baby clothing and strollers, miniature Ferrari cars, polo shirts, perfumes, watches and more -all sprinkled with the Ferrari label.  Now, isn't that worth a visit until your sports car dreams come true too?

What's even more amazing is that one can take a tour of this tunnel.  Once a month (usually on a Sunday), via The Brooklyn Historic Railway Association, hour and half tours are conducted and narrated by Bob Diamond who actually re-discovered the tunnel in 1980.  Way to go Bob!

Adults pay $15 while children pay $10.  It is for a good cause, especially since The Brooklyn Historic Railway Association is a non-profit organization.

Be forewarned, to enter the tunnel, one must climb down a manhole located in the middle of the street.  I actually think that's a bit adventurous!

The next tour takes place on May 16, 2010.  To register and find out about future tours, see images of previous tours and to discover fun facts about the history of Brooklyn's great railway system go to: http://www.brooklynrail.net/bhra_events.html

Hotting It Up In New York City!

By Doshka Harvey

It's not officially summer in New York City and spring has just barely begun, yet things are already hotting up here with 90 degree weather.

The last two days have been deliciously warm.  Girls cannot resist showing some skin in tanks tops, while the boys cannot resist sneaking a peak - some things never change.

A gentle stroll along the Brooklyn Promenade is always soothing for many and the view is consistently amazing.

Beautiful Gilles Marini

By Doshka Harvey

You may be familiar with Gilles Marini as a former model and for his sexy role as Dante in the first Sex And The City movie.  Gilles also participated in ABC's Dancing with the Stars season 8, coming in at second place on the show's season finale.

Having moved on to other projects, Marini currently has a pictorial out of himself.  It's the Gilles Marini 2010 Calendar captured by Fred Goudon, an award-winning photographer.

Thumbnail image for Gilles-Marini-cover-mini.jpgSure the calendar is beautiful to look at because Gilles is quite a stunning man, however, it serves a purpose which is a great one.  All benefits from the sales will go to the Maximum Hope Foundation which helps families with terminally ill kids.

The Gilles Marini 2010 Calendar can be purchased exclusively at www.amazon.com.

Salute To The Men Of Citadel Security!

By Doshka Harvey

It is Thursday, February 18th and today marks the official last day of Fashion Week being held at Bryant Park.  The shows will now move on to their new home, next season (September 2010), at Lincoln Center.  And, one group I'd like to pay a big salute to are the Citadel Security team that we all see each season at the tents.

Citadel Security has been providing security during Fashion Week since 1993.  That's pretty much 17 years now.  The charming Ty Yorio - a former NYPD homicide detective and a retired sergeant is the president and founder of the company and he runs a quality team.

Sure, fashionistas attending might get a bit annoyed at times when they must form long lines to get into a show or they may not get why security tells 'everyone move to the left or I need everyone to keep the line to the right,' but at the end of the day, these men are doing their job and they are good at it.  We know and they know the drill.

So, to the men at Citadel Security I say, see you next season at Lincoln Center for a new beginning.  Some of us promise to be just as pushy, sometimes snobby and as intrigued as we always are to get into a show (invite or not, you know who you are out there), but we expect you to keep us secure and in check like you always do.  We understand and we thank you!

Don't Forget Haiti

By Doshka Harvey

Though the media might not be covering what's going in Haiti as feverishly as they were a few weeks ago, please let's not forget Haiti.  Rescues are still taking place and people still desperately do need help.

American Idol's Simon Cowell may be known as being mean on the hit show, however, as mean as he pretends to be on television, the man does still have a kind and soft heart.

Cowell's Haiti charity single is making waves on iTunes and Amazon download charts. The single is a cover of REM's "Everybody Hurts" and features top British artists such as Robbie Williams, Cheryl Cole, Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis, just to name a few.

Proceeds will go to Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and the Sun newspaper's Helping Haiti campaign.
